You're Not Lost, You're Exploring

I took this pic while on a recent staycation on the North Shore of Oahu. At the resort where I stayed I dared to go beyond the protective hedges and discovered a little trail that had perfectly placed benches for viewing the famed sunsets. It was a great place to stop and reflect and it gave me the most marvelous inspiration for this article

If life has thrown you into a new and uncertain chapter, use this time to be free and explore. It's okay to feel untethered. Use this time to find new focus, create a new you. Set your sights on becoming who you've always wanted to be and where you want to go.

For so much of our lives we've lived within set structures, expectations, and predictability--family, education, career. It's all been pretty much mapped out in one way or another. But when that structure is gone due to job loss, retirement, empty nest, death, illness, etc., and your world changes--what then? Maybe you're now alone or have new responsibilities and an uncertain future. And you're feeling anxious, lonely, or hopeless. Or you're just swimming along.

Many people describe this phase as feeling "lost." Being lost is not where most people want to be because it's uncomfortable, uncertain, and it's not what we know how to do. Nor is it something most people prepare for (except experienced adventurers).

So consider yourself an adventurer. Take stock of what you have and the life highlights that have gotten you where you are. Know that you're stronger and more experienced than you think. Be okay with floating for awhile. Relax and enjoy the experience of being “lost” and finding yourself. Know that you're not the first person who's done this, that's walked this path. Allow your mind to consider the possibilities of who you can become, not necessarily what you need to do. (The doing will come in time.)

You can wander alone or get a professional guide. Find someone who can point out the paths, the rest stops, the scenic views. Pack your bags and let's go on an adventure!
