Finding Focus Is About Getting Back To Your Authentic Self

If you've been stuck and trying to create a new path for yourself but just can't seem to find your way, the problem most likely is that you're still holding on to old thought patterns, actions, and outdated stories about who you are and what you can and cannot do. This is especially true for people who are entering a new chapter whether by choice or by change (empty nest, retirement, loss of a loved one, job loss, health issues, family relationships, etc.)

Over the years you've likely been conditioned into various roles and a structured life--as a student, parent, spouse, caregiver, career person--all of which have a fairly set pattern and roadmap. But what happens when life changes and you no longer have that job or that role? And all of a sudden you're thrust into an expanse of uncertainty?

Or maybe life is okay for you, but you still feel stuck with the feeling you could be doing more with your life.

This uncertainty can manifest into anxiety, stress, unhealthy habits, sleeplessness, or depression to name a few things.

So what can you do?

In order to find new focus, you first have to find your authentic self. It's about getting back to who you really are, before you were programmed into the life you've led.

If you want different, you have to do differently.

The first and easiest thing I do to help clients refocus and get back to their authentic self is to have them honor their experience. Make a list of 20 things/experiences that have brought you the greatest joy and made you the most proud over the years. Whether it's winning an award, being a star soccer player, giving a speech, raising your children, being a supportive friend--make a list of what has brought you great joy. Don't be shy! Then go back and honor yourself for being that person.

So often we let the negative experiences outshine the positive aspects of who we are. You must remember the greatness of your being. Keep this list and refer to it. It's the start of remembering your authentic self and bringing forth the essence of who you are meant to be. As you work to uncover more of your authentic self--your purpose, your passions, your power--you'll begin to see things in a clearer light. You'll have "aha" moments and understand why you reacted to things in a certain way, or why you continue to do things a certain way. The more you uncover your authenticity, the easier finding your focus will become.
